About Us

What is Coastal Oregon Greyhounds?

Coastal Oregon Greyhounds, is a 501 (c) (3) Oregon nonprofit corporation and a subchapter of Greyhound Pets of America Inc., which has been established to promote adoption of retired racing greyhounds in the Coastal Oregon Coast and surrounding areas.

What is the Coastal Oregon Greyhounds Adoption Philosophy?

In compliance with the Greyhound Pets of America Code of Ethics, which governs the adoption of retired racing greyhounds, Coastal Oregon Greyhounds is committed to ensuring that the quality of homes found will take precedence over the quantity of greyhounds placed.

What are the differences between adoption from a kennel or foster home.

Some of the greyhounds come straight from the racing kennels to their new home.  Making the transition relatively stress free.  Greyhounds who come from foster homes have been exposed to the home environment and have some awareness of home situations.

What is the Procedure for Adopting a Greyhound from Coastal Oregon Greyhounds?

Complete and submit or mail the online application to Coastal Oregon Greyhounds. Once the application is reviewed, you will be interviewed by phone. Following approval for adoption, you will visit one of the adoption locations to select a greyhound, and finally, we will arrange a home visit to answer any questions you may still have.

What Does it Cost to Adopt a Greyhound?

A minimum donation of $195 per greyhound is required, which includes the cost of spay/neutering, parasite testing, vaccinations, transportation and grooming.  A GPA identification is also included in the donation.

How Long is the Adoption Process?

In general, after an adoption application is received, it is processed within a week. Availability of greyhounds for adoption varies depending on when they are released by racetracks. Usually, there are a small number of greyhounds available for adoption at all times.

Very Fast

At maximum acceleration, a greyhound reaches a full speed of 70 kmh within 30 meters or six strides from the boxes, traveling at almost 20 meters per second for the first 250 meters of a race.

Couch Potato

Greyhounds require little exercise, are very quiet, and are ideal for suburban homes, unlike many other large breeds of dogs.
